Montana State B & C Track Meets (Day 1)

Track & field athletes in Montana have been competing for state titles since 1905. Back then the meet was held in Missoula and all the schools competed against each other and competition was for the boys only. Today, both boys and girls compete in four classes determined by enrollment, AA, A, B & C, and there is competition for both boys and girls. The meet has grown over the years so that two sites are needed for the event. The 2009 AA & B meet is being held at Legends Stadium adjacent to Kalispell's Glacier High School. The A & C meet is being hosted by Butte at the Bulldog Memorial Stadium.

At the State C Girls meet, several northeast Montana athletes scored points in finals held Friday.

The 400 meters was won by senior Kourtney Danreuther of Big Sandy with a time of 58.85. The Peerless Panthers got a 3rd place finish from senior Shelby Snare with a time of 1:00.47 and a 6th place from junior Mary Kelly who clocked a time of 1:01.64.

The 3,200 meter record set back in 2005 by Jayme Larson of Opheim (11:30.00) held for another year. Sophomore Mariah Gondeiro of Belt won the race with a time of 11:56.07. Mackenzie O'Dore, a sophomore from Joliet, who's mother competed for the Outlook Bluejays as Alane Garneau, finished 2nd with a time of 12:09.87. Scobey senior Brittney Selvig finished sixth with a time of 13:00.07.

The long jump was won by Jessica Denney, Bridger with a leap of 16-01.25. Second place went to Morgan Klose of the Fairview Warriors, 16-0.25 and the Circle Wildcats scored a fifth place finish by Tina Van Horn, 15-09.25.

Doin' It On The Dirt!

Not everyone can afford a trip to Daytona or Indianapolis to watch a race these days, but don't worry, you won't be forced to get your motorsports fix totally on television. The 2009 Bump N Run racing season kicks off June 6th and 7th in Eastern Montana. Races in Glendive and Plentywood are the first on this season's schedule with races Saturday evening in Glendive and Sunday afternoon in Plentywood. For those who have never been, Bump N Run has been described by some as Dukes of Hazzard driving on a tight, twisty dirt track. The cars are similar to those seen in demolition derbies, stripped of glass and extraneous parts with roll bars and other safety equipment added. The top speed on the track is held down by the turns and jumps, but there's still plenty of action. You'll see some bumping and spin outs along the way and maybe even a roll over.
The first race on Saturday June 6th in Glendive is set for 5pm at the Dawson County Fairgrounds. The races Sunday June 7th in Plentywood begin at 1pm. Plentywood's track is at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds, just east of the city.

For those coming from a distance to Plentywood, there is public camping at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds as well as at nearby Bolster Dam.

The photos for this story came from the official site of the Montana Bump N Run Association and were taken at last year's season opening race in Plentywood. Contact information for entries and further information about upcoming races is included on that website as well.

Make sure you check back to the MonDak Sports Blog for race results.

Announcing a new blog

I've decided to expand my presence in the blogosphere with a site devoted to sports in Montana and North Dakota. The primarly focus will be on high school sports in northeast Montana and northwest North Dakota, but I plan to include coverage of other events as warranted. Watch this site for pics and results this summer from area American Legion baseball action as well as rodeo, motorsports and anything else which pops up.

If you're a sports fan in the region with a digital camera, feel free to e-mail pics of your favorite teams and athletes in action. The e-mail address for MonDak Sports is mondaksports@yahoo.com.
